The Mediterranean Diet May Help Prevent Heart Attacks and Stroke

In the PREDIMED multicenter trial in Spain, a total of 7,447 people with high cardiovascular risk were randomly assigned to one of three diets: a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil, a Mediterranean diet supplemented with mixed nuts, or a control diet (with advice to reduce dietary fat intake).1

Compared to participants in the control group, a 30% and 28% lower risk of major cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes) was observed for the group assigned to a Mediterranean diet with extra-virgin olive oil and the group assigned to a Mediterranean diet with nuts, respectively.1
